The Neighbor Laughed About My Ruined Lawn Until He Saw His Driveway The Next Morning2

Mrs. Alvarez and I worked in silence until dawn, planting a border of thick, fast-growing lavender along the edge of his driveway, right where his tires always rolled onto my grass. We placed each seedling with care, packed the soil, and set a small wooden sign at the end. It said, “Please enjoy this garden. It is protected by the neighborhood association.” The sign was real, and so was the rule behind it, which Mrs. Alvarez had helped write years before.

At eight, my neighbor stepped outside with his keys and froze. A tidy lavender hedge ran the full length of his driveway, with a narrow gap exactly one car wide. A letter from the association was tucked into the sign, explaining that parking on another resident’s lawn carried a fine, and that the hedge was a gift from the street. Three neighbors stood on their porches, sipping coffee, watching quietly. He could not tear it out without breaking the association’s own rules.

He knocked on my door twenty minutes later, red faced, and I opened it with a cup of coffee in my hand. He started to complain, then stopped, because the scent of lavender had drifted across the street. In a quiet voice, he apologized and offered to repair my lawn. I accepted, and we spent that afternoon laying new sod together. The hedge bloomed that summer, and my neighbor now waves every morning, parks neatly in his driveway, and trims the lavender himself.
