A Little Girl Made A Promise And Many Decades Later Something Arrived At Her Door2

I do not remember crossing the garden. I remember the cold air on my face and a trembling voice saying, “Zsofia?” Nobody had said it that way in eighty years. Istvan took off his hat, and I saw the same serious eyes from the doorstep. We stood on the sidewalk for a long time, holding each other’s hands, and neither of us could say a single word.

Inside, over tea, he told me everything. His family had survived the war by hiding in a cellar outside the city, and afterward he searched for me through the Red Cross for years. Every record said only that a family named Varga had left for Canada. When I married, my surname changed, and the trail went cold. He moved to Montreal in 1957, worked as a clockmaker, married a kind woman named Judit, and buried her six winters ago.

Last month, a Hungarian community newsletter printed a notice for my late husband’s memorial, with the name of his granddaughter, a nurse at the city hospital. Istvan took two buses to find her. He told me he had not come to disturb my life, only to return the ring I had once wrapped in a handkerchief and given him for safekeeping, a child’s pledge neither of us had ever forgotten. He asked nothing of me.

I laughed and cried, and then I told him that a promise is a promise. He looked at me, startled, and I said I was too old for long engagements. We were married in the spring, in my garden, with my children and his nieces watching from folding chairs. My granddaughter carried the little silver ring on a cushion. We have a bench by the window now, and every evening he reads to me, in Hungarian, the same books we once traded.
