The School Board Took Away My Crossing Guard Job And Then One Cold Monday Arrived2

Dana explained that she was a television reporter, and that she had quietly filmed my corner for four years while telling no one. The folder held footage of me walking children across in rain, snow, and heat. One clip showed a delivery truck running the red light on a March morning. I had thrown my arm out and pulled a little boy back onto the curb, and the truck’s mirror had clipped my shoulder. I had gone home, iced it, and told nobody. I thought it was just part of the job.

She told the crowd that the school board had cut my position to save eleven thousand dollars a year, and that the board had never visited the corner. Then she played the clip on a tablet while parents watched in silence. Several of them wiped their eyes. A father near the front said he was the boy’s father, and he had never known who pulled his son to safety. He walked over and shook my hand with both of his, and he could not speak for a long moment.

The board met that same evening, with three hundred people filling the room. Dana’s video had already been shared across the whole city, and the board president, red faced, read a short statement. My position was restored, with a raise, and the district would install a proper traffic signal at my corner by spring. I stood in the back with Lily’s rolled paper still in my hand, and I did not unroll it until I got home.

Inside was a crayon drawing of a tall man in an orange vest, holding a stop sign, with a huge yellow sun above him. Across the bottom, in wobbly letters, she had written, “Thank you for waiting for me every day.” I am seventy-one years old, and I cried at my kitchen table like a boy. The new signal was installed in April, and the city named the corner Pruitt Crossing. I still stand there every morning, and Lily’s drawing hangs inside my vest.
