The Piano I Bought For Two Hundred Dollars Held A Secret Hidden Beneath Its Keys2

The common room held an old upright, slightly out of tune. The nurse wheeled Ingrid in, and the other residents gathered around. I sat at the keys and told them gently that I had a song someone had written for her fifty years ago. Then I began to play. The first notes drifted through the room, soft and slow, and everyone grew still. Ingrid turned her head toward the sound, and her fingers moved in her lap.

By the second page, she was humming. By the third, she was pressing invisible keys on her knees, and her eyes were wide and shining. When I played the final bar, she whispered a single word, her first in weeks, the nurse told me afterward. “Harold.” Tears ran down her cheeks. She reached out, took my hand, and said, “He wrote it for me in the rain, and then my father made me leave.” The nurse covered her mouth.

Later, Ingrid’s niece told me the rest. Harold Vance had wanted to marry her, but Ingrid’s strict family forbade it and moved her to another state. Neither could afford to travel, and letters were intercepted. Harold never married, and he taught music for fifty years. Ingrid married later, was widowed young, and began losing her memory. Her niece had never known about the waltz. She pressed my hands and said the music had reached her aunt when nothing else could.

I donated the restored piano to the nursing home, and I tune it every month for free. Ingrid cannot always remember my name, but every Saturday when I sit down at the keys, she hums along to the waltz and smiles. Sometimes she says, “He is coming, you know.” I never correct her. I just play it again, softly, and I tell her that he already has.
