The Customer Mocked My Busboy’s Stutter Until The Old Woman Sitting Beside Him Finally Spoke2

Danny began slowly. “The s-s-special tonight is l-lamb shoulder.” He stumbled, paused, breathed, and tried again. No one in that restaurant moved. The old woman nodded encouragingly at every word, and when he finished, she smiled and said it was the most beautiful recital she had ever heard. Then a man at the next table began to clap, and soon the whole restaurant joined in, until Danny’s eyes filled with tears.

Richard sat motionless, staring at his plate. His mother put her hand over his and told him quietly she had never been angry about the school gates. She had been heartbroken, because she had spent thirty years afraid her own voice would make her son ashamed. He tried to speak, but nothing came. For the first time in his adult life, he could not find the words. Tears rolled down his face, and his wife quietly took his other hand.

Richard stood up and walked over to Danny. His voice cracked as he said, “I am deeply sorry. I was cruel, and I have been cruel for a very long time.” Danny nodded and, haltingly, told him it was all right. Richard asked if he could shake his hand, and Danny did. Then Richard turned to his mother, knelt beside her chair in the middle of the restaurant, and put his head in her lap.

The Ashworths stayed until closing. Richard left a tip equal to a week’s wages for Danny, and the next week he brought his mother back for lunch and let her order for the whole table. Danny now works front of house with a little card on his apron that says, “Take your time, I will wait.” Richard sponsors a speech therapy fund in his mother’s name, and he never walks ahead of her anymore.
