A Rich Woman Took Every Turkey Until A Mysterious Voice Spoke Over The Store Speakers2

The store manager, Mr. Alvarez, stepped out from behind the courtesy desk and explained everything. For two months, he had noticed Cordelia buying every clearance turkey the moment it was marked down, always charging it to the Voss Family Foundation card. His cashier mentioned it, and he grew curious, so he quietly called Edmund. The foundation’s holiday program fed four hundred families each Thanksgiving, and it had been billed thirty-six dollars per turkey.

Edmund unfolded the receipt in his hand. It was an invoice from a company called Harbor Table Provisions, charging the foundation full price for hundreds of turkeys. The company belonged to Cordelia. She had been buying clearance birds for $8.99, repackaging them, and billing her own father’s charity for the difference, pocketing nearly eleven thousand dollars since September. Edmund’s voice cracked as he said he had trusted her with the one program his late wife had started.

Cordelia tried to protest, but the camera had caught everything, including every cruel word she had said to the grandmother. Edmund turned away from his daughter and walked down the aisle to the frail woman, whose name was Mrs. Whitaker. He took off his hat and apologized, then asked her grandson’s name. She whispered that it was Tobias. Edmund lifted the top turkey from the pile and placed it in her basket, along with soup vegetables, bread, and fever medicine the manager hurried to fetch. The shoppers in aisle six began to applaud.

Cordelia repaid every dollar within the month, and her father removed her from the foundation. He donated all fourteen turkeys to the shelter downtown that very night, and the manager kept the clearance price for the families who needed it. Tobias recovered by the weekend. On Thanksgiving, Edmund drove to Mrs. Whitaker’s small apartment with a full dinner, and Cordelia came along, carrying one turkey in both hands. She apologized at the door, and this time she did not look away. Mrs. Whitaker took the turkey and invited her in to help with the soup.
