My Husband Left Me On The Farm And Then His Mother Handed Me A Folded Document2

I told her I had never set foot in that branch. She opened her folder and showed us a photograph from the bank’s camera: my husband standing at the counter, alone, with a woman I had never seen beside him. The signature card had been copied from my driver’s license application. My father went completely still, and then he laid a hand on my shoulder. He said nothing, but I knew he was steadying us both.

My husband finally broke. He admitted that his construction side business had failed two years earlier, and he had hidden it. The $140,000 had gone to pay its debts and to keep his mother’s mortgage afloat, while the credit cards covered the lifestyle he had promised her. The woman in the photograph was a friend who posed as a notary. He sobbed that he meant to repay it all before anyone noticed.

His mother and sister stood silent, horrified, and then his mother turned on him and said she would never have touched a dollar had she known. The fraud investigator explained that the loan would be frozen, the farm released, and the case referred to the authorities. My husband was arrested two days later. I did not feel triumph, only a deep, steady relief that my parents’ land was safe.

The court voided the loan, and my husband pleaded guilty, receiving probation and a repayment order. I filed for divorce and kept custody of the children. His mother and sister repaid what they spent, and his mother wrote me a letter of apology that I read once. The next harvest, our son wore brand-new boots. Dad says the corn has never looked better, and I think he is right.
