He Paid for Dinner Like a Gentleman Then Sent an Itemized Invoice the Next Morning

I went on a date with a guy my friend set me up with. He showed up with actual roses, not a grocery store bunch. Dinner was perfect. He was charming, opened doors, and pulled out my chair. When the check came, I reached for my wallet. He stopped me and slid his card down. A man pays on the first date, he said. I walked away thinking it was one of the best first dates I had ever had.

That was until the next morning. A payment request appeared on my phone before I had finished coffee. He had sent an itemized invoice for half the dinner, the flowers, parking, and the fuel he claimed he used driving to the restaurant. Beneath the total was a note explaining that he had only paid in front of the server so he would not look cheap. He added that I had enjoyed the evening and therefore owed my share.

I stared at the screen for a full minute. I had offered to split the check at the table. He had refused. What bothered me was not the money. It was the performance. The speech about how a man pays, followed by a private bill once nobody was watching. I declined the request and reminded him that he had turned down my offer in public. Then I told my friend exactly what had happened.

There was no second date. She apologized for the setup and said she had not known. Courtesy is not impressive when it exists only for an audience, and generosity loses its meaning when it arrives the next morning with a hidden invoice and a note about appearances. I deleted the request, put the roses in water, and went to work. The best first date I had ever had lasted exactly as long as the check.
