My Mother In Law Smeared Cake Across My Face At My Party And Everyone Gasped2

Greg explained that he had seen everything from across the room. While I rushed to the restroom, he picked up a slice of cake, walked straight to his mother, and pressed it into her face, saying, “Here is your tradition, Mom.” That was the scream I had heard. Then he calmly handed her a napkin and told the guests she would explain. The page in his hand was a printed copy of messages she had sent to her sister, which he had found on the family tablet two days earlier.

Greg read them aloud. Two weeks before the party, Barbara had written that she planned to “put that woman in her place” in front of everyone, and that she had already told the waiter to bring her a slice before anyone else. A young waiter near the kitchen nodded miserably and admitted she had slipped him sixty dollars. Barbara insisted it was only a joke, but the guests murmured, and my aunt shook her head in disgust.

Greg looked at his mother and said she had humiliated his wife for sixteen years, and that he was done laughing along. He told her she was not welcome in our home until she apologized to me in front of the same people she had performed for. Barbara’s chin trembled. She snatched her purse and hurried out, still red and dripping frosting, while someone near the door began to clap. Soon the entire room joined, and I cried again, but this time from relief.

Greg wiped a smear of frosting from my cheek and kissed my forehead. I washed up, put on the dress Barbara had hated, and we cut the cake together while the party carried on until midnight. Three weeks later, Barbara arrived at our door with flowers and gave a shaky apology. I accepted it, but we set clear rules about visits and comments. She has been polite ever since, and every birthday now begins with a quiet toast from my husband.
