My Mother Called Me Her Greatest Regret But Grandpa Stopped Walking Halfway And Everything Collapsed2

Howard opened the envelope and lifted out a stack of bank statements. Twenty-two years ago, he explained, he had set up a college fund for each grandchild, and Diane was named custodian of mine. She and Dad had quietly drained it. I had spent twenty-two months as a forensic accountant tracing every transfer, and the money had paid for Brooke’s wedding, Camille’s honeymoon, and the diamond bracelet Mom loved to brag about.

Dad lunged toward the side door, but two investigators from the state financial crimes unit were already waiting there. Ryan handed copies of my report to Mr. Whitaker, the foundation’s board chairman, who sat in the front row. I had sent him the originals the night before. Nearly $400,000 in donor gifts had been funneled through fake consulting invoices. Several donors quietly took out their phones. Mr. Whitaker read the first page, and his hands began to shake. Diane whispered that it was all a misunderstanding, but no one believed her.

Camille burst into tears and swore she never knew where the money came from. Brooke stared at the floor and admitted she had suspected for years. Mom finally turned to me, her voice cracking, and confessed that I was her greatest regret because my questions kept coming closer to the truth. I told her I had never wanted revenge, only the truth. Howard added that he had stopped writing because Mom told him I never answered his letters. He had waited until I could prove everything.

Howard offered me his arm again, and we finished the walk in complete silence. Ryan was waiting at the altar, and I said my vows with a steady voice. The court later ordered full restitution, my parents resigned, and the foundation was rebuilt under new leadership. Brooke returned the bracelet and sent a handwritten apology. I used the recovered fund to start a scholarship for students who ask hard questions. Grandpa and I still write letters every week, and none of them go missing.
