My Husband’s Best Friend Drove Our Daughter Every Week And The Teacher Revealed Something Terrifying2

I hurried outside before the car had fully stopped. Chloe saw my face, then the paper in my hand, and burst into tears. “Mom, I’m sorry, please don’t be angry.” Marcus climbed out slowly, looking like a man who had carried something heavy for weeks. “I wanted to tell you,” he said. “I should have broken my promise the very first night.” We sat down on the studio steps, and the two of them told me everything.

Three weeks earlier, Chloe had landed badly after a lift and felt something snap in her foot. The sports clinic where Marcus worked found a stress fracture and warned that dancing on it could end her career for good. Chloe panicked. She had worked for years to earn that place, and she was certain that Brian and I would make her quit forever. So she begged Marcus to keep it secret and drive her to physical therapy instead. That was why she had gripped his sleeve in our driveway. He had told her she must tell us, and she had begged him for one more week.

Anger and relief wrestled in my chest. I told Marcus that no promise to a child was worth risking her health or our trust, and he nodded and apologized. Then I turned to Chloe and told her I would never take her dream away, but I would always take her pain seriously. The instructor, watching from the doorway, promised to hold her place for the whole season and said many dancers return stronger after proper recovery.

That night we told Brian together. He was hurt, then ashamed that he had brushed off my worries. A specialist confirmed the next week that with two months of rest and therapy, Chloe could dance again. By spring she was back at the barre, and Marcus drove her again, this time keeping nothing from us. She still hugs me tightly before every lesson, and now I know why.
