A Stranger Pounded On My Door At Dawn And What He Carried Changed Our Lives2

Helena came in, placed the box on the table, and burst into tears before she could speak. “I owe you the truth,” she said. “I was your son’s business partner’s assistant. After the accident, I was told to deliver this box to you, along with the ring and a letter. But my boss, Mr. Garrison, ordered me to keep it hidden. He threatened to destroy my career and hurt my family if I said a word. I was too afraid. Yesterday, I finally decided to bring it to you, and I lost the ring in the store while panicking.”

Mr. Caldwell explained that Garrison had been quietly stealing from the company your son built, and your son had discovered it. Weeks before the crash, he changed his will and placed his shares, along with the family ring, in the box for Lily. Garrison had learned of it and buried it. The phone call Helena received in the store had come from Garrison himself, demanding to know where she was. After Lily returned the ring, Helena finally called Mr. Caldwell and told him everything.

Inside the box was a letter in my son’s handwriting. He wrote that if anything ever happened to him, the shares would belong to Lily, and that the ring was meant to be sold to keep her safe and comfortable. I read it aloud through tears while Lily climbed onto my lap. Mr. Caldwell added that the shares were worth far more than anyone realized, and that Helena’s testimony and the records would be given to the authorities that same day.

Garrison was arrested within the week. The court restored the shares to Lily, and a trustee was appointed to protect them until she grows up. We fixed the roof, refilled every prescription, and bought Lily more shoes than she could ever wear. Helena visited often and became a dear friend. Lily keeps the ring in the wooden box, and when people ask about it, she smiles and says that doing the right thing found its way back to us.
