I Chose A Tiny House Over My Daughter’s Basement And Then Everything Came Out Thursday2

The second page was a confession in Greg’s cramped handwriting. In June, the plant cut his hours to twenty a week. He hid it from Rachel, borrowed against his truck, and let the mortgage slip five months behind, sure he could fix it before anyone noticed. When things got worse, he looked at my Social Security amount and did the math. The seven hundred fifty dollars was his number, written alone at midnight. Rachel had only repeated the words he gave her.

I sat quiet for a long time. Then I did what nineteen years at the lumber yard taught me. I pulled the pad closer, found a pencil in my drawer, and asked for every letter from the bank. The overdue amount was nine thousand four hundred dollars. The bank had offered a repayment plan, but Greg never opened that envelope because he was too ashamed. I told him plainly that I would not pay rent to be family, and I would not watch my daughter lose her home either. The next morning we called the bank together from my kitchen table.

Rachel sat across from me and cried until her shoulders shook. She said she had repeated Greg’s words like a parrot, and that “earning your keep” was the worst thing she had ever said to anyone. I told her it hurt, and that I was still her mother. Then Greg went out to the truck and carried in Lily, who had fallen asleep in the back seat. She blinked at my little kitchen and whispered, “Grandma, this house is way better than the under.”

The bank approved the plan within two weeks. Greg took weekend shifts at the elevator scale, and Rachel picked up extra hours at the clinic. By spring, they were caught up. I keep my own door and my own keys, and I watch the grandbabies two days a week because I want to, not because anyone wrote it on paper. Greg’s legal pad hangs on my refrigerator under a magnet. Every Sunday, we eat supper at their table, and nobody counts anything.
