My Parents Celebrated Christmas Without Me So I Gave Away The Cake And Changed Everything2

Dad confessed that after they first toured the bungalow, he told the whole family that he and Mom had bought it with their own savings. He sold their old house to make the story look real. They planned Christmas without me because I was the one person who would never let that lie slide, and the joke at Brooke’s expense was only a convenient excuse. I listened without interrupting, then told them the lie hurt less than how easily they had erased me.

I did not shout. I said the bungalow would never be theirs, but I would not let my parents sleep in the street. The cancellation I had written to my attorney stayed in place. Instead, I paid six months of rent on a furnished two-bedroom apartment with no stairs, near Mom’s park, so they would have time to find a home they could truly afford.

The bungalow went to someone else. On Monday morning, I called my contact at the housing program, and my company’s payroll department happened to have an opening. Joanne hesitated, then cried, then said yes. Her offer letter finally gave her the proof of income her landlord had demanded, and I leased her the bungalow for one dollar a year for the first twelve months, with the option to buy it later at a fair price. She never once asked me for more than that.

My parents apologized to Brooke first, in front of the whole family, and then to me. Dad’s voice broke, and Mom held my hand for the first time in years. Brooke hugged me and whispered that she had always wished someone had spoken up sooner. On moving day, Lily taped one last paper snowflake to the bay window and told me it was for good luck. Next Christmas, I invited exactly who I chose, and my parents were welcome as long as they brought the pie.
