I Never Imagined What The Superintendent Was About To Tell The Entire Gym That Night2

The page was written in his mother’s careful handwriting, and Daniel read it aloud. She wrote that the winter he was sick, the family fell thousands of dollars behind on hospital bills. Every month for six months, an envelope appeared in their mailbox with two hundred dollars inside and no name. One morning the envelope tore, and she recognized the handwriting from the bus sign-in sheet. She never told anyone, because she knew Dad would hate being thanked. So she asked her son to do it in public, someday.

Dad stood frozen, the microphone hanging from his hand. Daniel explained that he had spent two months tracking down every child who rode that bus in 1994. All twenty-two were in the gym, and their families had heard the story from them. That was why so many people rose the moment Dad said that name. The principal alone had never been told. My father had only meant to answer one rude sentence with one honest name.

Mr. Hollis walked to center court with his card shaking in his hand. He told my father he was sorry, and admitted he had read the job title and never the person. Dad shook his hand and said a title is only what is printed on a paycheck, and what you do on the route is yours to decide. The gym laughed softly, and the tension broke. Then Daniel announced that the district would rename the north county loop the Walter Brandt Route, with a scholarship for any student whose family faces a medical crisis.

For the first time in my life, I watched my father cry. The twenty-two grown children lined up across the court, and each one waved at him, exactly the way they had through the bus windows thirty years ago. Later, in the parking lot, I asked why he never told me. He shrugged and said nobody asks a bus driver what he did, only where he is going. I hugged him and promised I would never forget who he really was.
