My Grandmother Spent Days Baking A Beautiful Wedding Cake For My Brother’s Fiancée Last Summer2

Kayla’s face went from white to red. The guests nearest us went completely silent. She stammered that she’d been planning to give it to Grandma after the honeymoon. Then she admitted she had spent it on the champagne tower near the dance floor, the one she had added at the last minute. Ryan just stood there holding the invoice. Grandma, sitting at table four, looked down at her hands.

What happened next surprised everyone. Ryan walked straight to Grandma’s table, took out his wallet, and emptied every bill into her hands. His wallet held almost four hundred dollars. Then he took the microphone from the DJ. He thanked Grandma for the most beautiful cake anyone in the room had ever seen, told the guests she had made it at her own expense, and apologized to her in front of all of them. The applause lasted almost a full minute.

Kayla spent the rest of the night avoiding our table. Two days later, she showed up at Grandma’s door with an envelope containing the full nine hundred dollars and a handwritten apology. I suspect Ryan made her write it. Still, she said she was sorry for laughing and for calling Grandma a liar. Grandma accepted, because that is who she is, and bought her medication that afternoon. She even insisted on hugging her.

Something good came out of it, too. Several guests asked Grandma for her number that night, and she now bakes birthday and anniversary cakes for half the town, for a fair price, paid upfront. I made her a little sign for her kitchen that says exactly that. Her sugar flowers are now famous. Ryan and Kayla are still married, and she is noticeably polite to Grandma. At their first anniversary, Kayla ordered a cake from her and paid in full before Grandma even preheated the oven.
