I Rushed A Stranger And Her Child To The Hospital Without Locking Up My Shop2

His name was Marcus Hale, and he was the boy’s father. A long-haul driver, he had been rushing home overnight after his wife called him in a panic, but her phone died before she could say where they were. He found their car abandoned on the county road, followed the mud and the trail of questions into town, and a neighbor pointed him to my shop. When he saw the open door and the empty counter, he feared something had happened to us.

The teenagers had been watching my shop all morning, hoping to find it unattended. Marcus held both by the collar, sat them on the curb, and stood in my doorway for almost two hours until an officer arrived. He never touched the register. The words on his lips were meant for me, because he guessed I would one day watch the footage and wanted me to know my shop was safe. Only then did he leave for the hospital to see his son.

Marcus came to the station the next morning and asked the officer to bring me his message, because he did not want to frighten a woman who had already given so much. The officer handed me an envelope holding a handwritten letter and a check for the lost day of sales. I tore up the check and kept the letter. As for the two boys, they now sweep my floors every Saturday to work off what they almost took.

Last Sunday, the whole family visited my shop. The little boy, healthy and loud, handed me a drawing of a red car with a giant hand lifting it up. I told them about my own son, the one I could not get to a hospital in time, and Marcus wept openly. He replaced my broken front lock that afternoon. Now the boy calls me Grandma, and for the first time in twenty-eight years, I feel I finally got there in time.
