Two Hotel Clerks Told Me To Find A Cheap Motel While My Daughter Slept Soundly2

Marisol had guessed I was someone from corporate the moment Derek said executive booking. She came to me because she was afraid the evidence would disappear. Inside her folder were handwritten lists of every room she had cleaned that never appeared on a guest record, with dates, room numbers, and photos of the empty registration screens. She had reported it twice to the general manager, Mr. Halvorsen. Both times, he told her to mind her floor.

By nine, our corporate auditors were in the building. The scheme was simple. Derek and Shane told walk-in guests and gala visitors the hotel was sold out, then quietly offered them unregistered rooms for cash at half price. They only made that offer to guests who looked wealthy. I didn’t. Halvorsen took a third of every envelope. Over eight months, they had pocketed nearly $214,000. My reservation had been moved into the secondary tab so my suite could be sold too. When I asked to see the manager, they panicked.

At eleven, I walked into the staff meeting with Sophie holding my hand. Derek went white when he saw me at the head of the table. Shane stopped smiling. I introduced myself as Elena Ward, the owner, and the police officers by the door handled the rest. Halvorsen tried to blame the reservation software. Nobody believed him. Derek, Shane, and Halvorsen were arrested for theft and fraud before lunch.

Marisol is now our guest relations director, and her first decision was to retrain every front desk employee in all four of our properties. That evening, Sophie and I placed the roses beside her father’s photo in our suite. Two of the stems were still bent. They were still beautiful. The next week, a new line was engraved beneath the words on the lobby wall. Nominated by Marisol, and chosen by me: Kindness checks every screen.
