The Wife They Threw Out At Midnight Was The Only One Who Knew How To Keep The House Warm

I turned my phone to silent and slept better than I had in months. By morning it showed nineteen missed calls and a string of increasingly frantic texts. The house had dropped below forty degrees overnight. It said only: “You were right. About all of it. Please just call me when you’re ready. Not about the boiler. About us.” I set the phone down and looked out the window at the snow. For two years I had waited for him to stand up for me at that table. He never had. And now, freezing in a house his father left him, he finally understood exactly what he had let his mother take from me.
