The Monthly Fortune My Grandfather Sent Had Been Vanishing Before It Ever Reached Me2

It came apart quickly once my grandfather started asking real questions. My mother had been receiving the transfers, exactly as Harold arranged, but she had not been passing them to me. She had been passing them to Trevor and Coraline, quietly, in exchange for their silence about an arrangement I had never known existed. My mother-in-law had convinced my mother that the money was better managed by the family that truly deserved it, and my mother, who had always favored appearances over honesty, had gone along with it for a cut of her own. The luxury bags in that hospital room, the errands, the carefree voices, all of it had been funded by money my grandfather sent for me and my baby.

My grandfather did not raise his voice. He simply took out his phone and called his bank, right there beside my hospital bed, and requested a full transaction history of every transfer since my wedding day. Then he called his attorney. Trevor started to stammer explanations, that it was temporary, that they had been saving it for us, that they meant to tell me. Coraline tried a different angle, insisting that as my husband’s family they had every right to help manage what came into the household. My grandfather let them both finish. Then he told them that the money had been a documented gift to me alone, that redirecting it through deception was fraud, and that the bank records would show exactly where every dollar had gone.

The numbers were staggering once they were laid out. Years of monthly transfers, none of which I had ever seen, spent on designer bags, vacations, and a lifestyle my husband and his mother had performed for everyone while letting me believe we were barely scraping by. I had gone without, budgeted every grocery run, and worried about affording my own daughter’s arrival, all while a fortune meant for me flowed straight into their hands. My mother had sold me out for comfort, and my husband had married me knowing the whole scheme was already in motion.

I did not scream. I looked at Trevor holding those ridiculous shopping bags in a hospital room, and I understood that the man I married had been stealing from me since our wedding day. My grandfather stayed by my side through all of it. With his attorney and the bank records, the diverted money became a legal matter, and much of it was recovered and placed into a trust for my daughter and me, this time with no one in the middle. I filed for divorce before I even left the hospital. My mother’s excuses never mattered again, and neither did Coraline’s sense of entitlement. In the end, the baby I had worried I could not provide for grew up wanting for nothing, cared for by a great-grandfather who had never stopped trying to reach her, and by a mother who finally learned the difference between the people who claimed to love her and the one who actually did.
