I stood up from the table without raising my voice. “No,” I said, and the single word landed harder than any speech could have. Dad’s proud smile faltered. Colton’s laugh died in his throat. I set my napkin beside my plate, told the room to enjoy the celebration, and walked out into the Houston rain while my father called my name across the private dining room. I did not turn around.

That night I made a decision I had been circling my whole life. I cut off all contact. No calls, no visits, no explanations. I changed nothing about how hard I worked, but I stopped pouring myself into a family that only reached for me when Colton needed rescuing. For a year, there was silence.
