Baggage Handlers Explain Why Tying a Ribbon to Your Luggage Is a Big Mistake

Travelers often look for simple ways to spot their luggage more easily at the baggage carousel. One popular tip is tying a colorful ribbon, scarf, or dangling tag to a suitcase so it stands out among dozens of similar bags. At first the idea seems practical, especially when so many suitcases look nearly identical after a long flight. Airport baggage handlers, however, warn that the habit can create unexpected problems.

Modern airports rely on automated systems that scan barcodes and route luggage through complex conveyor networks. Extra items such as ribbons or loose decorations can interfere with those scanners or get caught in the machinery. When a barcode cannot be read properly, the suitcase often requires manual inspection, which slows the process and raises the chance of delays. Handlers also recommend removing old airline stickers and leftover labels, since outdated markings can confuse the sorting systems as bags move quickly through the lines.

Other practical advice includes placing suitcases wheels-up when loading them onto the conveyor to reduce the risk of damage, and being aware that dense food items such as marzipan can sometimes trigger extra security screening. While not prohibited, these items can still slow the journey.

Instead of tying on ribbons, experts suggest choosing luggage with a distinctive color, pattern, or built-in identifier. This makes a suitcase easier to recognize at the carousel while keeping the automated baggage system running smoothly. A clear visual difference without dangling extras is the simplest way to protect both your bag and the flow of luggage behind the scenes.
