The family dinner started normally until Michael opened the door.
His father walked in first.
Then she appeared.
The woman from the mall.
The woman I had followed.
The woman I had covered in smoothie.
I froze.
“What is she doing here?” I shouted.
Michael looked confused.
“You mean my mom?” he asked.
My entire world stopped.
I had attacked his mother because I thought she was his secret girlfriend.
I tried explaining that I thought he was cheating.
Michael was shocked that I never simply asked him who she was.
Then his mother smiled and revealed something worse.
She admitted she knew I had seen them together.
She had intentionally acted romantic by holding his arm, letting him carry her bags, and kissing his cheek.
She wanted to test me.
She told Michael I was the “crazy girl” who attacked her and said he should break up with me.
But Michael refused.
Instead, he admitted that he understood why I panicked.
Then he dropped to one knee.
He pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him.
I said yes immediately.
His mother exploded and said she would never accept our marriage.
Michael finally stood up to her.
He told her she did not control his choices anymore.
He also pointed out that she had created the misunderstanding herself.
The woman I thought destroyed my relationship had actually helped reveal the real problem.
Michael and I got engaged that night.
And his mother learned that love could not be controlled by fear or manipulation.
