For Two Months I Thought My Daughter-in-Law Was Keeping My Grandson From Me

When my grandson was born, I expected to meet him within days.

Instead, weeks passed without a single visit.

Every time I asked my daughter-in-law if I could come see the baby, she gently turned me away.

“He’s still sensitive,” she would say.

“Maybe next week.”

But next week never arrived.

Days became weeks.

Weeks became two full months.

I had not held my grandson.

I had not seen his face.

I did not even know his name.

The situation broke my heart.

Whenever I asked my son what was happening, he defended his wife.

He insisted she was exhausted.

He said becoming a new mother was difficult.

He promised everything would be fine soon.

Still, something felt wrong.

No grandmother expects to be completely shut out after a baby is born.

The more time passed, the more worried I became.

Eventually, I could not ignore the feeling any longer.

One morning, after receiving another excuse, I made a decision.

I packed the baby gifts I had bought months earlier.

There were tiny socks.

A few soft onesies.

And a yellow blanket I had fallen in love with the moment I saw it.

Then I drove to their apartment.

My hands shook the entire way.

I rehearsed what I would say.

Part of me was angry.

Part of me was terrified.

When my daughter-in-law finally opened the door, every prepared speech disappeared.

She looked nothing like herself.

Her eyes were swollen.

Her face was pale.

Her hair was unwashed.

She looked exhausted beyond words.

Then I noticed the baby in her arms.

He was impossibly small.

A thin oxygen tube rested against his tiny cheek.

Behind her, the apartment looked overwhelmed by chaos.

Medical papers covered the table.

Medicine bottles lined the kitchen counter.

Something was terribly wrong.

Before I could ask a single question, she burst into tears.

Then she said something that instantly changed everything.

“I wasn’t trying to keep him from you.”

The heartbreaking reason she had hidden my grandson for two months would erase every ounce of anger I carried the moment I heard the truth.
